We want to share important news with you. After eight years of dedicated leadership, Carol Gebhart, Executive Director of Opening Doors, has announced her retirement at the end of December 2025.
Carol has been a steadfast advocate for women and their children experiencing homelessness in Dubuque, IA. During her time at Opening Doors, she has led with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. Her legacy is one of growth, resilience, and continued lasting impact.
This leadership transition has been carefully and strategically planned by our Board of Directors. An executive search is underway to identify the next Executive Director who will build on the strong programs, partnerships, and mission-driven work established by our founding leaders, staff, and Board and further strengthened under Carol’s leadership. Carol will continue in her role through the end of the year to ensure a smooth and thoughtful handoff.

All proceeds from the gala directly support the life-changing programs at Teresa Shelter, Maria House, and Francis Apartments, empowering women and children on their journey to self-sufficiency.
Opening Doors is seeking a dynamic and visionary Executive Director to lead our organization into its next chapter of impact and growth. This individual will be responsible for advancing our mission, overseeing strategic operations, driving fundraising efforts, and fostering strong community relationships. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will serve as the face of the organization and ensure alignment across staff, board, partners, and stakeholders.
