This summer at Opening Doors has been one for the books. From celebrating our 25-year anniversary to expanding programs and advocacy, the season has been filled with energy, growth, and impact.
Celebrating 25 Years of Healing, Hope, and Home
In June, we proudly hosted a ribbon cutting at Maria House to celebrate 25 years of Opening Doors. It was more than a milestone—it was a moment to honor the women, children, staff, volunteers, and community partners who have been part of our journey.
Strengthening Our Programs and Services
Demand for shelter and support continues to rise, and we are responding. Tours of our facilities have increased weekly, bringing more people into our mission. We secured both renewed and new grant funding, ensuring sustainability while continuing to expand. We also reached some of our highest numbers to date, reminding us of the urgent need for our services.
Showing Up in the Community
This summer, our team was out in full force. We advocated and connected with our neighbors at the Dubuque Farmers Market, hosted a booth at Juneteenth, and walked in solidarity during the NAMI Sunset Walk. Each of these events gave us the opportunity to raise awareness, educate, and build partnerships that fuel our mission.
On the policy side, we continued to advocate for greater access to funding for women and children experiencing homelessness. Raising our collective voice ensures that our community understands both the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Events that Inspire
Our Filling Your Cup Breakfast returned this summer with another sold-out crowd. Supporters gathered to hear powerful stories, celebrate resilience, and contribute to Opening Doors’ future. Events like these not only raise critical funds but also inspire deep connections with our mission.
Looking Ahead: Innovation and Growth
We are excited to share that work is underway to add a Brain Health Room at Teresa Shelter, a space dedicated to supporting the mental wellness of our residents. Alongside this, we welcomed new interns and staff members who bring fresh perspectives and passion to the team. Their contributions are already helping us strengthen programming and expand our reach.
Gratitude for Our Community
This summer reminded us of an important truth: the need in our community isn’t going away. But thanks to your support, Opening Doors continues to grow stronger and more impactful each year. Together, we are ensuring that every woman and child who comes through our doors finds more than shelter—they find healing, hope, and home.
